What Does It Take to ChangeMany of us, when challenged or stressed or confused, repeatedly resort to modes of conduct which are familiar even though the familiar modes do not work and often backfire. In this retreat Yvonne will teach ways to work with the habit of going to the familiar, with patterns of resistance, and with thoughts of "I don't want to" and "I can't." The work is intended to enable people to loosen the grip of the familiar and to develop effective modes of response to what we experience as difficult.

Patterns Which Shape Our Lives
With Yvonne Rand and Bill Sterling
Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, Ventana Wilderness inland from Big Sur
Monday, May 26 - Friday, May 30
In this four day workshop we shall examine patterns which individuals develop in the course of a lifetime, the origins and both the positive and negative consequences of such patterns, and antidotes for negative patterning. We shall use forays into the natural world of the Tassajara Canyon to sharpen skills in observing and describing which can apply equally to outer and inner landscapes.
Bill Sterling, a lay Buddhist practitioner, earns his living by practicing real estate law, a field he finds fertile ground for using Buddhist precepts to train the mind. He is an ardent watcher of birds and cherishes the natural world.

Weeding the Roots of Desire
Three-Day Retreat in Juneau Alaska
5:00 pm, Thursday, November 13 - 4:00 pm, Sunday, November 16
Desire is a deeply lodged source of motivation in all of us, whatever the object of our desire may be: affection, recognition, power, fame, pleasure, wealth or other material stuff. Untamed, uncontrolled desire can enslave us; mastery over desire can liberate us. The energy latent in the root of desire can be directed to wholesome or unwholesome conduct. What makes the difference? What strengthens or dilutes desire? How may we transform selfish desire into generosity and loving kindness? In this retreat Yvonne will explore answers to these questions in light of traditional Buddhist teachings and offer practices for daily life which enhance our ability to see clearly and to choose the ends to which we direct our energy and our resources.
