The Eight Worldly Concerns

An eight-week series of Thursday evening classes

The Yoga Room, Berkeley, California

7:30 - 9:00 pm, January 10 - February 28

Eight motive causes of suffering can be listed: we desire fame, gain, pleasure and praise; we reject obscurity, loss, pain and censure. Such motivations, if left unattended, are likely to pattern our lives for disappointment and unhappiness. In this class Yvonne will present ways to recognize the presence and operation of the Eight Worldly Concerns, to sleuth out their causes, and to cultivate antidotes which can lead to fulfillment and happiness.

Speaking for Better, Speaking for Worse

A four-week series of Thursday evening classes

The Yoga Room, Berkeley, California

7:30 - 9:00 pm, June 5 - 26

The way we think, the way we speak, and the way we act all determine how we feel about ourselves, how we relate to others, and how others relate to us. This series of classes will focus on how speech can function for better or for worse in our lives and can lead to immediately discernible changes in our relations with ourselves and with others. We shall consider, among other modes of speech, ways of speaking which connect and ways which separate, ways of speaking which reduce and ways which exacerbate tension and irritability, and ways of speaking which clarify or alternatively muddle our perceptions.

The Art of Aging

An eight-week series of Thursday evening classes

The Yoga Room, Berkeley, California

7:30 - 9:00 pm, September 4 - October 23

Aging is a natural process which culminates in death. The accumulation of life experience which accompanies our later years goes hand in hand with the gradual or sudden loss of mental and physical capacities: vision weakens, hearing wanes, memory wavers; we totter and stumble as our sense of balance degrades; organs fail; illnesses occur more often and are more serious. We start to lose the capacity to control our activities and actions. The result of the realities of aging can lead to profound discomfort and dismay, to depression and despair. The prospect of dying may engender fear and terror. So, as our bodies begin to deteriorate and our minds begin to lose their hold, what possibilities remain for leading a sane, healthy and dignified life? How can we prepare ourselves to continue living well as we approach the end of living at all? In this class, Yvonne will introduce perspectives and practices drawn from traditional Buddhist teachings which can provide consolation, perspective, amusement and relief as we add to the toll of our days.
